Cave de la Côte (Tolochenaz) wins Swiss Winery of the Year 2019 award at record-breaking edition
- Thursday 24 October 2019
Swiss winegrowers certainly had their moment in the spotlight on October 24th. Following on from 2018's historic vintage, there were no less than 3254 wines entered in the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse 2019. Of the 544 wineries who entered, around 80 made the short list, and only 39 won awards at the Gala du Vin Suisse. La Cave de la Côte is certainly no stranger to awards ceremonies but this is the first time it has ever won the coveted title of Swiss Winery of the Year 2019.
The Gala du Vin Suisse awards ceremony was held in Bern's Kongress Kursaal in front of 500 guests. The Cave de la Côte started the evening in style, taking the first two places in the Chasselas category with its Coteau d’Aubonne Esprit Terroir 2018 (1st place ) and its Luins la Bravade Esprit Terroir 2018 (2nd place) before ending on a truly high note, carrying off the title of Swiss Winery of the Year 2019.
The rules stipulate that to enter the Swiss Winery of the Year category, a minimum of five wines must be entered across three different categories. The winner is the winery that achieves the best ratio of awards to entries, and highest number of shortlisted and awarded wines.
Co-organised by VINEA Association and Vinum magazine, the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse remains the world's largest competition for Swiss wines. This year saw a record number of entries (3254 wines made by 544 producers), which were judged in Sierre from June 24 through 29. Over the six-day period more than 156 Swisswine experts blind tasted and scored the wines, which came from 21 cantons.
In August, the six highest-scoring wines from each of the competition's 13 categories (known as the shortlisted wines) were tasted blind once more by 11 judges from Switzerland and other countries, resulting in the final list of the top three wines in each category. The judges were impressed by the quality and diversity of the 80 wines that featured in this part of the competition.
Results spanning Switzerland, with surprises and a new special award
For once, each of Switzerland's six wine regions won at least one of the competition's categories. The Müller- Thurgau category is usually won by producers from German-speaking Switzerland, but third place was taken by the Cave des Coteaux de Areuse-Boudry. The category for wines with residual sugar was dominated this year by producers from canton Geneva who took the first two places.
New this year was the special award created in memory of much-missed VINEA director Elisabeth Pasquier. It was won by Domaine de Chafalet (Dardagny) for their sweet wine Elise. This award goes to the best wine made by a new winery that has not been shortlisted for at least five years.
